PVC | Application of Automatic Viscometer in Polyvinyl Chloride Viscosity Testing

640 (2).webp
Polyvinyl chloride (PVC for short) is a polymer formed by the polymerization of vinyl chloride monomer (VCM) under the action of initiators such as peroxides and azo compounds, or under light and heat according to the free radical polymerization mechanism. Vinyl chloride homopolymers and vinyl chloride copolymers are collectively referred to as vinyl chloride resins.

Due to its excellent properties such as good stability, plasticity, and insulation, polyvinyl chloride is widely used in industries, construction, agriculture, daily life, packaging, electric power, public utilities and other fields.

The data of polyvinyl chloride's viscosity number, K value, and degree of polymerization are among the important indicators of product performance. Therefore, testing the accuracy and stability of these data is the core of polyvinyl chloride quality control.

The national standard GB/T3401-2007 specifies the use of Ubbelohde viscometer to measure the viscosity number and K value of dilute solutions of polyvinyl chloride resins. During the test, the temperature of the temperature-controlled pool is set at (25±0.5)℃, and the measured temperature should be stable within ±0.05℃ of the set temperature of the temperature-controlled pool.

The IVS400 automatic viscometer from Hangzhou Zhongwang Technology Co., Ltd. is designed with Ubbelohde viscosity as the core, complying with relevant standards such as ISO, GB, and DIN. It realizes a fully automatic testing process including automatic cleaning, automatic measurement, automatic calculation, automatic waste discharge, and automatic drying. The timing accuracy can be as precise as 0.001s. It provides a stable and uniform temperature field of ≤±0.01℃ for the test, ensuring the accuracy of experimental data.

Testing Process

  • Solution Preparation: Weigh the polyvinyl chloride (PVC) sample with a 1/10,000 balance, put it into a sample dissolving bottle, and use a DP25 automatic dispenser (pipetting accuracy ≤0.1%) to transfer a quantitative amount of cyclohexanone into the sample dissolving bottle;
  • Sample Dissolution: Put the sample dissolving bottle into the P12 Zhongwang polymer dissolver (multiple samples can be dissolved at the same time), and use magnetic stirring to dissolve the sample according to the specified temperature and time;
  • Viscosity Testing: Turn on the IVS400 viscometer, set the required water tank temperature (25℃±0.01℃), add the solution into the Ubbelohde viscometer, turn on the software, and the test will be automatically performed and calculated, and the test data can be automatically stored on the computer;
  • Test Results: The IVS400 automatic viscosity measurement system is connected to the computer, which can automatically obtain test results and store data, facilitating diversified viscosity data analysis;
    • Viscosity number: 1=t-to toC
  • Cleaning of Viscometer Tubes: After automatic waste discharge, cleaning reagents are added for automatic cleaning and drying.
