Polyethylene (PE for short) is a thermoplastic resin obtained by the polymerization of ethylene. Industrially, it also includes copolymers of ethylene with small amounts of α-olefins. Polyethylene is odorless, non-toxic, and has a waxy feel. It has excellent low-temperature resistance (the minimum service temperature can reach -100~-70°C), good chemical stability, and can resist erosion by most acids and alkalis (but not acids with oxidizing properties). It is insoluble in general solvents at room temperature, has low water absorption, and excellent electrical insulation.
Polyethylene can be processed by general thermoplastic molding methods and has a wide range of uses. It is mainly used to manufacture films, packaging materials, containers, pipes, monofilaments, wires and cables, daily necessities, etc., and can also be used as high-frequency insulating materials for TVs, radars, etc. Among its numerous applications, the two main consumption areas of polyethylene are pipes and films. With the development of urban construction, agricultural films, and various packaging industries for food, textiles, and industrial products, these two areas are developing more and more extensively.
The national standard GB/T 1632.3-2010 specifies the determination of the viscosity of dilute solutions of polyethylene polymers using a capillary viscometer. The outflow time of the solvent and the polyethylene (PE) polymer solution of specified concentration is measured at 135°C. The reduced viscosity and intrinsic viscosity are calculated based on these measured outflow times and the known concentration of the polyethylene (PE) polymer.
Zhongwang's automatic viscosity measurement system IVS800H realizes a fully automated measurement process based on the Ubbelohde viscometry as the core. It is specially used for high-temperature viscosity testing of materials such as PE copolymers. The sample chamber is kept at a constant temperature to completely avoid sample precipitation, and realizes full automation of automatic sampling, automatic testing, automatic cleaning, and automatic drying. Temperature range: room temperature to 150°C (accuracy ±0.05°C); timing accuracy: 0.001S.
Testing Process
-
Solution Preparation: Weigh the polyethylene PE sample with a 1/10,000 balance, put it into a sample dissolving bottle, and use a DP25 automatic dispenser (pipetting accuracy ≤0.1%) to transfer a quantitative agent into the sample dissolving bottle.
-
Sample Dissolution: Put the sample dissolving bottle into the P12 Zhongwang polymer dissolver, and use magnetic stirring to dissolve the sample according to the specified temperature and time.
-
Viscosity Testing: Put the flask containing the PP sample into the IVS800H sample tray with the set oil bath temperature, start the testing function, and the test results will be automatically obtained.
-
Test Results: The IVS800H automatic viscosity measurement system is connected to the computer, which can automatically obtain test results and store data, facilitating diversified viscosity data analysis.
-
Cleaning of Viscometer Tubes: The viscometer tubes are fixed in the constant temperature water tank of the IVS800H viscometer, and can be automatically cleaned, drained, and dried without disassembly and removal.
Applicable standards: GB/T 1632.3, SO 1628/3, ASTM D1601, etc.
